Ethernet help PLEASE....!

Hi guys, I just got a new pc, and am trying desperately to transfer my MX files to it from my old pc.
Some of you may be laughing your a** off and I dont blame you!
OK, i got an Ethernet cable which apparently needs no HUB.
And thats about as far as Ive got....
Ive tried the XP home networking thing, no go. (New connections etc), but still no go.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me .

Are you sure your NICs are working (the lights light up and all)?

Is it a regular cable, or a cross-over cable?

Are both PCs the same, or are they at least using the same OS?

Are you using the Direct Connection Wizard, or the Internet setup Wizard?
