Judging by the number of viewings quite a few folks have tried DVD Shrink. I haven't used it yet so would appreciate some feedback from those who have. Image

I prefer DVD2One or DVD X Copy Platinum, unfortunately neither are free.

Does DVD X Copy Platinum still work? I was told by a guy who bought it just before they went out of business that now his bought & paid-for software no longer works and of course there isn't any support from the company.

DVD shrink is an excellent piece of software -- its free
simple to use
error free
and best of all drives straight through the Content Scrambling System (CSS) used to scramble the audio/video data on most DVD-Video discs today.

Freeware - always begin your search there!

The explanation link takes you to various information sites - I think the Digital Video Forums would be more suited to your needs. 8)

To be honest Joe, I couldn't answer that question because I used to use it before I got DVD2One, but I like DVD2One so much that it's all I ever use these days, although I must admit I don't make many dvd backups. Sometimes I use DVD Architect, but for simple backups it's a complicated program, whereas DVD2One is a tiny app, and it's easy to use. Unfortunately, as I said, it's not free.

I was considering a purchase myself :)
Jewish Kid: Is anyone else having problems concentrating on this? I just can't seem to concentrate.
Cartman: Maybe we should send you to a concentration camp.

Well guys, i have been using Dvd Shrink for about 6 months. Ive lost count of the films ive ripped and burned with it....
I've tried loads of different software and i believe that this is the quickest and easiest to use..
Never had a problem, it decodes most films and guess what...its FREE!.

............Cool............. 8)

OK -- I know I'm going to sound like an idiot -- especially since I've asked this a number of times and never got a satisfactory answer -- probably just asked the wrong people.

So -- If I have a folder that contains vob files, will a program like Smart Ripper" extract the video files and save them in a video format I can use (such as AVI or MPEG, etc.)?

VOBs are just a container format for mpeg2 video, dolby-digital ac3/mp2/linear pcm/dts audio, and bitmap images (subtitles).

All you need to do is demux the vobs to extract the audio and video components. Tools such as DoItFast4U, DVD-lab, etc can do this quite speedily.

You then remux the video and 1 audio track to get an mpeg2 (.mpg) file. If you want it in avi format, then just transcode the vob (eg using VirtualDub) specifying the output compression format (XviD, DivX, HuffYUV, uncompressed, etc).

The purpose of SmartRipper is to copy the contents of a protected dvd-video disc to the harddrive (minus the copy protection) for further processing. Once the resulting vobs are on your hdd, then SR's job is done. So, no, SR can not directly process vobs on the hdd into a more useable format.

Or more simply, Smartripper and "rippers" will simply get around copy protection (hopefully) to copy the dvd to your hard drive. After that you need to encode the vobs to whatever format you want.

If you've never done it before I suggest you use AutoGK, VDub may be a bit complicated for you:
