DVD Ripper

Postby please_share on Fri Jan 03, 2003 3:03 am

:?: Any suggestions on a good EASY-TO-USE DVD ripper? I went to download.com and checked out the comments on lots of them, none seemed to get a lot of positive comments (possibly because those posting couldn't figure out how to use them). What works for you? Would like to convert some of my DVDs to avi or mpg for sharing.

Welcome to the world of dvd coding. i reccomend and use SmartRipper, free and available at http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/sr.htm - There are Soooooo many web pages devoted to informing you exactly how to do it and doom9 has a somewhat usefull site. i prefer and recomend http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/index.htm as i feel this is one of the most informative sites on the net.

There are many different ways to rip and code a movie, and i assume (maybe incorrectly) that by saying rip you are meaning the "whole process" and not just extracting the .vob files from the dvd to your hard drive, but rather the steps involved from the time you put the dvd in the puter - till you burn a cd with the whole movie.

There are several steps involved and many different outcomes. there are also some rather slick packages devoted to "window metalilty click and do" people, where all you need to do is start the program. I prefer the individual steps, where you have complete control over everything, from ripping only a tiny segment to converting at what ever bitrate you want.

if all you need is a ripper - get smartripper.

if you want the whole process - several steps involved
rip the .vob files to disk (will save your dvd drive fromspinning for 2-24 hours)
decide on format - avi, mpeg, mpeg-2, etc (i recommend Divx for avi)
figure out the bitrate (more bitrate, bigger filesize, better quality, etc)
figure out the sound bitrate
code it up (see nicky page for complete instructions)

CHECK THE QUALITY before you SHARE IT. dont you hate d/l an movie that has audio sync problems.
work sucks :pee off

i've also asked about this topic but never really got any answers so i did a little trial & error. if you want to rip to divx i started using smartripper and dvdx2.2 it lets you set birate and has lame and other encoders for audio. it's worked well for me so you might want to try it. lol peace
