Postby mxmon_glasgowrangers on Mon Mar 15, 2004 3:47 pm

hi,
what is the minimum spec for divx/xvid movies?
does converting divx and xvid to mpeg improve the quality?and finally does reducing ure resolution from 32bit to 256 colours help improve playback, no matter what i do my audio i salways out of sync
i got all the newest codecs including divx 5.1.1 and still no joy, any help would be gratefully recived folks
thanx

Don't really know what you mean... YOu can make an avi (divx/xvid) any spec you want, it's not like vcd, svcd or dvd mpeg which has set standards. But of course the lower the bitrate, the worse the quality as a general rule (and of course people who don't know what they're doing can make bad quality avi's even at a high bitrate).

No, usually it makes it worse, as any encoding will lose quality as a general rule, but in order to make an mpeg almost as good as the avi it would have to be very big. If you made an mpeg directly from dvd and made it large, as in a dvd mpeg, then yes, it would be better quality than a 700 mb divx or xvid avi, but as the video you are referring to has already been compressed to avi, you will not be able to get it much better no matter how large your mpeg file will be.

Well it might make your cpu work a little less, but i doubt it would solve the out of sync problem. But I'm not sure when you get the out of sync problem, when you try to encode something or when you play any video file?

yeah when i try to play an avi file.
i never used to have that problem but latley ever film i get playback is terrible but they work fine on other peoples computers
the sound can somtimes be as much as 30-60 secs out of sync, really annoying.
i know that xvid is harder to get right codecs for but even my divx is acting up this way. i have an amdk6 500mhz, 8mb graphics,250mb ram
could this be causing probs. i have disabled everything in start up and i always have at least 93% resources free.
i know im doing somthing wrong. i have even used the ac3 filter utility to turn the reolution down to 8bit and still no joy.
i cant wait 2 watch my lot3 return of the king:)
so any ideas, by the way i tried that acemega codec pack from rita.it but still no joy lol, oh well
thanx for all ure help with everything ppl

What player/players are you using, are you using only one or have you tried different media players and still get the same problem? It could be a playback issue in your player, for instance if your player is set to play the video at the wrong framerate there could be a delay. You said also that "lately" all the avi's are experiencing delay. Many avi's are encoded with ac3 sound these days, are they all ac3 perhaps? Could be a wrong playback setting in the ac3 filter.

There is a slight chance that something could be wrong with the delay on your sound card, but I don't know why that would have happened to you "all of a sudden."
