Clinton admits Bosnia 'mistake'



Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has said she made a mistake in claiming that she came under sniper fire on a trip to Bosnia in the 1990s.
"It proves I'm human," she said in Pennsylvania ahead of the key primary election vote there on 22 April.

SEATTLE - The FBI says it's analyzing a torn, tangled parachute found buried in Southwest Washington to determine if it might have been used by legendary plane hijacker D.B. Cooper.

Children playing outside their home near Amboy, in Clark County, found the chute sticking up from the ground this month in an area where their father had been grading a road.

Agent Larry Carr says they pulled on the fabric as much as they could, then cut the parachute's ropes with scissors. They had seen recent media coverage on the D.B. Cooper case and urged their dad to call the FBI.

Cooper hijacked a plane from Portland, Ore., to Seattle in 1971, got $200,000 and asked to be flown to Mexico. He parachuted from the plane's back stairs somewhere near the Oregon border, and agents doubt he could have survived.

Carr says there are no markings on the parachute to indicate whether it's the type Cooper used. He's hoping someone with expertise in the parachutes will come forward and examine it.

World's first brain prosthesis revealed



The world's first brain prosthesis - an artificial hippocampus - is about to be tested in California. Unlike devices like cochlear implants, which merely stimulate brain activity, this silicon chip implant will perform the same processes as the damaged part of the brain it is replacing.
The prosthesis will first be tested on tissue from rats' brains, and then on live animals. If all goes well, it will then be tested as a way to help people who have suffered brain damage due to stroke, epilepsy or Alzheimer's disease.

Dutch MP posts Islam film on web

Dutch right-wing politician Geert Wilders has posted a controversial film critical of Islam's holy book, the Koran, on the internet.
The opening scenes show a copy of the Koran, followed by footage of the attacks on the US on 11 September 2001.
The 17-minute film was posted on video-sharing website LiveLeak.
Its planned release had sparked angry protests in Muslim countries. The Dutch government has distanced itself from the views of 44-year-old Mr Wilders.

Baghdad under curfew amid clashes

A curfew has been imposed on Baghdad amid continuing clashes between Shia militias and Iraqi security forces.
The curfew will last from 2300 (2000 GMT) on Thursday until 0500 on Sunday to "protect civilians", officials say.
More than 130 people have died since a clampdown on Shia militias in the southern city of Basra started on Tuesday. Unrest has spread to Baghdad.
Heavy fighting between the Shia Mehdi Army, led by radical Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr, has continued in Basra for a third day, with violence in other parts of southern Iraq.

Clinton will fight 'like Rocky'

Hillary Clinton has vowed to fight on in the contest to be the Democrats' presidential candidate, comparing herself to the film character Rocky.
Speaking in Philadelphia, where the film Rocky was set, she said: "When it comes to finishing a fight, Rocky and I have a lot in common. I never quit."
Some senior Democrats have called for Mrs Clinton to quit the race. Rival Barack Obama has dismissed that idea.
Meanwhile, likely Republican nominee John McCain is visiting Virginia.

Nato to back US missile defence

Nato countries have agreed to back US plans to site a missile defence system in Europe, at a summit in Romania.
Member states will endorse a communiqué backing the plan to position missile defence bases in the Czech Republic and Poland, US officials said.
Albania and Croatia were invited to join the 26-member alliance.

Global temperatures 'to decrease'



Global temperatures this year will be lower than in 2007 due to the cooling effect of the La Nina current in the Pacific, UN meteorologists have said.
The World Meteorological Organisation's secretary-general, Michel Jarraud, told the BBC it was likely that La Nina would continue into the summer.
This would mean global temperatures have not risen since 1998, prompting some to question climate change theory.

Microsoft gives Yahoo three weeks



Computer software giant Microsoft has given Yahoo a three-week deadline to respond to its offer to buy out the internet company for $44.6bn (£22.3bn).
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said his company would take its case directly to Yahoo's shareholders if Yahoo's directors did not respond by 26 April.
Microsoft made an unsolicited bid on 31 January, but Yahoo's board rejected it as substantially underrating its value. Yahoo has since explored alliances with other firms, but no offer has surfaced.
In a letter, Mr Ballmer acknowledged that such negotiations were underway, but wondered why Yahoo was not talking to Microsoft too.

US soldiers killed in Green Zone


Three US service personnel have been killed and 31 wounded by rocket attacks on the Green Zone and a base elsewhere in Baghdad, the US military has said.
The rocket attack at 1530 (1230 GMT) on the Green Zone, which houses government offices and foreign embassies, killed two personnel and wounded at least 17.
A separate attack at the same time on a forward operating base in the Rustamiya district killed one and injured 14.
The attacks came after fighting between US and Iraqi forces and a Shia militia.

Princess Diana unlawfully killed


Princess Diana was unlawfully killed due to the "gross negligence" of driver Henri Paul and the paparazzi, an inquest jury has found.
The jury reached the same verdict for her companion Dodi Al Fayed.
The jury also specified that Mr Paul's drink-driving and a lack of seatbelts contributed to their deaths.
Mr Al Fayed's father Mohamed refused to accept the verdict. Former Met Police chief Lord Stevens said he hoped it would bring "closure".

Gaza gunmen attack border depot

Two Israeli civilians and seven Palestinian militants have been killed after a raid by militants on a fuel depot near a Gaza border crossing.
Gunmen who shot dead the two Israelis - workers at a fuel depot near the Nahal Oz crossing in northern Gaza - were pursued by Israeli forces.
Soldiers killed two militants in the area and air strikes later killed five others, also injuring two children.
The Islamic Jihad group said it had been trying to seize Israeli soldiers.

European politicians have voted down calls to throw suspected file-sharers off the net.
The idea to cut off persistent pirates formed part of a wide-ranging report on creative industries written for the European parliament.
But in a narrow vote MEPs backed an amendment to the report which said net bans conflicted with "civil liberties and human rights".

Israel strikes after Hamas raid

An Israeli air strike on the Gaza Strip has reportedly killed 11 Palestinians after a Hamas attack which left three soldiers dead.
Five children are among those killed by the strike near Bureij refugee camp, doctors say, and a Reuters cameraman was killed, apparently by a tank shell.
Confirming the Bureij strike, Israel said it had targeted gunmen.
In all, 22 people were killed on one of the bloodiest days since Israel's Gaza incursions in February-March.

Iraqi cleric threatens 'open war'

Radical Iraqi Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr has threatened to wage "open war" on the Baghdad government if it does not halt operations against his supporters.
Moqtada Sadr said he was giving the government a "last warning", and urged it to take "the path of peace".
His statement came as Iraqi troops, with US and UK support, clashed with his forces in Baghdad and the south.

Thousands dead in Chinese quake



A powerful earthquake has killed at least 10,000 people in China's south-western Sichuan province, up to 5,000 of them in just one county.

Many more have been killed and injured in other parts of the country after the 7.9-magnitude quake struck at 1428 local time (0628 GMT).
At least 50 bodies have been recovered from the rubble of a school where an estimated 900 students were buried.
President Hu Jintao has urged "all-out" efforts to rescue victims.
Search teams were sent to the area but struggled to get through because routes were blocked.

A new type of identity fraud, which sees hackers tapping into voice-over IP telephony accounts, has been highlighted by a VoIP equipment maker.

Usernames and passwords from voice-over IP (VoIP) phone accounts are selling online for more than stolen credit cards, Newport Networks has found.
