Cuba's new President Raul Castro is to lift a ban on a wide range of consumer electrical appliances.
Cubans will be allowed for the first time to own DVD players and computers, according to an internal government memo leaked to Reuters news agency.

Markets slump on banking worries

Image

European and Asian stock markets have fallen heavily in reaction to the emergency bail-out of US investment bank Bear Stearns over the weekend.
London's FTSE 100 index was down 2.5%, in Paris the Cac 40 slumped 2.6% and Frankfurt's Dax fell 3.4%.
Investors are worried that the collapse of one of Wall Street's biggest names is a sign that the the credit crunch is getting worse, and lending might seize up. :thedeal

Web creator rejects net tracking

Image

The creator of the web has said consumers need to be protected against systems which can track their activity on the internet.
Sir Tim Berners-Lee told BBC News he would change his internet provider if it introduced such a system.
Plans by leading internet providers to use Phorm, a company which tracks web activity to create personalised adverts, have sparked controversy.
Sir Tim said he did not want his ISP to track which websites he visited.
"I want to know if I look up a whole lot of books about some form of cancer that that's not going to get to my insurance company and I'm going to find my insurance premium is going to go up by 5% because they've figured I'm looking at those books," he said. :ill

Kosovo clashes force UN pullout

Image

United Nations police in Kosovo have been forced to withdraw from Serbian areas in the divided city of Mitrovica after clashes with Serb demonstrators.
At least 22 UN police and eight Nato troops were reported injured after a raid to retake a court seized by Serbs. Nato troops - who used tear gas as they faced gunfire, stones and petrol bombs - have now taken control of security.
The violence is the worst since Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence last month. :biggun:

Dozens killed near Iraqi shrine

Image

A female suicide bomber has killed at least 42 people and injured 58 in the Shia Iraqi holy city of Karbala, Iraqi health officials say.
The bomb went off near the Imam Hussein shrine, reportedly inside a cafe, and eyewitnesses described seeing bodies scattered across the street.
Seven Iranians are believed to be among the dead, health officials say.
The city has seen deadly bomb attacks in the past, with about 100 people killed in two blasts last April.
Officials suspect al-Qaeda insurgents were behind the bombing in the city 80km (50 miles) south of Baghdad, but no group has claimed responsibility. :bombF

End Tibet unrest, says Dalai Lama

Image

The Dalai Lama has called for an end to violent protests in Tibet, denying claims by China that he was responsible for the unrest.
He said he would resign as head of Tibet's government-in-exile if the violence in his homeland worsened. :annoyed

Bush speech hails Iraq 'victory'

Image.. :bushfinger

President George W Bush has marked the fifth anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq with a speech defending his decision to go to war.
Speaking at the Pentagon, Mr Bush said the war was one "we can and must win".
And he went on to say the US and the region were safer now that former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was not in power.
The speech comes amid criticism in the US of the war and its costs. But a recent "surge" of US troops to Iraq has been credited with reducing violence.

1970s radical freed from US jail

Image

A woman who spent 24 years on the run before pleading guilty to a 1975 attempted police car bombing, has been released after a seven-year jail term.
Sara Jane Olson, formerly known as Kathleen Soliah, was a member of the militant Symbionese Liberation Army.
The group became famous for kidnapping newspaper heiress Patty Hearst in 1974.
The group carried out a series of bombings, murders and robberies before most of its members were killed in a dramatic fire in 1974 after a gun battle with Los Angeles police. :bomber

There still remains much controversy as to wether or not Patty Hearst was actually ever the victim of or a willing participant of the so called "kidnapping" by the SLA...

US probes passport file breaches

Image. :Obama . Image

The US Department of State has launched an investigation into repeated breaches of passport files compiled on the three main presidential candidates.
State department contractors viewed the files of Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama, while a trainee accessed Hillary Clinton's file.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has apologised to all three candidates.
US passport files include data such as age and place of birth, foreign travel records, and a Social Security number.
That number can be used to obtain credit records and other personal information.
Two state department contractors have been fired and a third disciplined. :whip3

Cheney in oil talks with Saudis

Image

US Vice-President * Cheney has met Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah to discuss ways of stabilising the oil market.
US officials said there was "a lot of commonality" in the talks in Riyadh on the way to move forward in the global energy market.
Oil prices have risen about 16% this year, but the oil producers' cartel, Opec, has declined to raise output. :please

Hearst gang woman back in prison

Image

A member of a radical US 1970s group has been returned to jail, less than a week after being released on parole.
Sarah Jane Olson was freed on Monday after seven years in jail for attempted bombings and second-degree murder during a campaign in 1975.
But officials found an "administrative error", and realised she still had one more year to serve before being freed.
Olson's lawyer said the California prison authorities were "bowing to political pressure". :tissues

Image[/url]..Image

A string of suicide attacks, shootings and rocket strikes have claimed dozens of lives on a day of violence in Iraq.
In the bloodiest single incident, 13 Iraqi soldiers died when a suicide attacker drove a fuel tanker into an army base in Mosul in northern Iraq.
Meanwhile, the US military said it killed 12 militants in a house east of Baquba, in Diyala province. It said they were preparing suicide attacks. :bombM :bombF

US-Afghan forces kill insurgents

Image..Image

American forces in Afghanistan say more than a dozen insurgents have been killed in a joint US-Afghan operation in the southern province of Uruzgan.
The forces say they were returning fire after coming under ambush.
In a separate incident, the US-led coalition force said two of its soldiers had died when their vehicle struck a mine in Kandahar province.
Violent attacks are multiplying in the south and east as the winter snows melt, says the BBC's Alastair Leithead. :devilshoot

US military Iraq toll hits 4,000

Image

The number of United States military personnel killed in Iraq since the US-led invasion five years ago has passed the 4,000 mark.
According to an Associated Press breakdown of the figure, 97% of deaths occurred after US President George W Bush declared on 1 May 2003 that major combat was over.
Roadside bombs accounted for 44% of deaths last year and 55% to date in 2008, the agency adds. :grenade

Iran 'behind Green Zone attack'

Image

The most senior US general in Iraq has said he has evidence that Iran was behind Sunday's bombardment of Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone.
Gen David Petraeus told the BBC he thought Tehran had trained, equipped and funded insurgents who fired the barrage of mortars and rockets.
He said Iran was adding what he described as "lethal accelerants" to a very combustible mix. :achmed

So now we should go to war with Iran? Iraq and Afghanistan has put a serious drain on our troop strength...where will we get the soldiers from? Canada's Army is not large, they cannot afford to commit troops to a sustained war, Mexico is the same, the French are cowards, and the British are already pulling their troops out of Iraq...
