Pakistan army's top medic killed



The Pakistani army's top surgeon has been killed by a suicide attack in the city of Rawalpindi, the military says.
Lt Gen Mushtaq Baig was one of at least eight people killed by the attacker, who also died.
Gen Baig is the highest ranking officer to be killed in Pakistan since the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre.

Taleban issue mobile phone threat



The Taleban have threatened to blow up telephone masts across Afghanistan unless mobile phone companies agree to switch off their signals at night.
They say that US and other foreign troops are using the signals to track down insurgents.
The Taleban have warned the masts and offices of the mobile companies will be destroyed unless their demands are met.

German court limits cyber spying



Germany's highest court has restricted the right of the security services to spy on the computers of suspected criminals and terrorists.
Under the technique, software sent in an email enables the authorities to spy on a suspect's computer hard drive.
The Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe said cyber spying violated individuals' right to privacy and could be used only in exceptional cases.

EU fines Microsoft record $1.4bn



The European Commission has fined US computer giant Microsoft for defying sanctions imposed on it for anti-competitive behaviour.
Microsoft must now pay a record 899m euros ($1.4bn; £680.9m) after it failed to comply with a 2004 ruling that it abused its position.
The ruling said that Microsoft was guilty of not providing key code to rival software makers.

Key Clinton backer moves to Obama



Hillary Clinton has lost a prominent black supporter, Democratic Congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis, to her rival Barack Obama.
The defection comes the day after the two main Democratic presidential candidates clashed in a TV debate.
Neither candidate landed a killer blow, but correspondents say Mrs Clinton failed to stop Mr Obama's momentum.

Israel warns of Gaza 'holocaust'



Israeli leaders are warning of an imminent conflagration in Gaza after Palestinian militants aimed rockets at the southern city of Ashkelon.
The deputy defence minister said the stepped-up rocket fire would trigger what he called a "bigger holocaust" in the Hamas-controlled coastal strip.
Israeli air strikes have killed about 30 Palestinians, including six children in the past two days.

Some 300,000 people have turned out in Sydney, Australia, for the 30th annual gay and lesbian Mardi Gras parade.
This year's parade is the largest ever, with 10,000 participants, including a military contingent, strutting their stuff in colourful costumes.

The event has become one of the largest gay pride festivals in the world and generates millions in tourism revenue.

Dozens die in Israel-Gaza clashes



At least 46 Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers have been killed in one of the deadliest days of fighting in Gaza since troops withdrew in 2005.
Medical staff said at least eight were children and up to 16 were militants. Israel said most were militants. Seven Israeli troops were lightly injured.
Israel says it wants to stop rocket attacks from Gaza, but about 50 hit Israel on Saturday, injuring five.

Abbas breaks contact with Israel



Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has suspended contact with Israel in protest at an assault on Gaza which has killed about 100 people, an aide says.
The suspension came amid angry demonstrations in Gaza and clashes with Israeli troops in the West Bank.
Israeli PM Ehud Olmert vowed to carry on the assault, which came in response to militant rocket attacks on Israel.

Venezuela 'sends tanks to border'

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is sending thousands of troops and tanks to the border with Colombia, marking a sharp escalation in regional tensions.
Speaking on his weekly television show, President Chavez also said Venezuela's embassy in Colombia would close.
Mr Chavez said he was reacting to the "cowardly murder" of a leading Farc rebel by Colombian forces in a raid just inside Ecuador on Saturday.
Mr Chavez had earlier warned Bogota that any incursion into Venezuelan territory similar to Saturday's operation would be a "cause for war".

The races for both the Democratic and Republican US presidential nominations could be settled as four states vote in a major round of primary elections.
The main focus is on Ohio and Texas but votes are also taking place in Rhode Island and Vermont.
Democratic front-runner Barack Obama has said rival Hillary Clinton may have to quit if he wins in Texas and Ohio, but she has vowed to stay the course.

Clinton comeback wins key votes



Hillary Clinton has revived her campaign for the US presidency with projected primary election wins in three states.
US media say she has taken the Democratic primary polls in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island. The results of caucus meetings in Texas are not yet known.
Rival Democrat Barack Obama took the primary in the state of Vermont.

Meanwhile, John McCain has won the Republican nomination with projected wins in all the four states.

The evolving threat of al-Qaeda



In recent years, the notion of al-Qaeda as a decentralised organisation - a group that inspires attacks rather than organising and planning them itself - has gained common currency.
But now senior counter-terrorist officials have told the BBC that they have seen evidence that this is no longer the case and that the threat has evolved.
It is believed that al-Qaeda has in fact regrouped in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region and now poses a more direct threat, particularly to the UK.

China to crack down on pop stars



China is to impose stricter rules on foreign rock and pop stars after singer Bjork caused controversy by shouting "Tibet, Tibet" at a Shanghai concert.
Her cry followed a powerful performance of her song Declare Independence.
Talk of Tibetan independence is considered taboo in China, which has ruled the territory since 1951.

Alcohol 'quickly' cuts heart risk



Middle-aged non-drinkers can quickly reduce their risk of heart disease by introducing a daily tipple to their diet, South Carolina researchers say.
New moderate drinkers were 38% less likely to develop heart disease than those who stayed tee-total, a four-year study involving 7,500 people found.

Camera 'looks' through clothing



A camera that can "see" explosives, drugs and weapons hidden under clothing from 25 metres has been invented.
The ThruVision system could be deployed at airports, railway stations or other public spaces.
It is based on so-called "terahertz", or T-ray, technology, normally used by astronomers to study dying stars.

Bomber kills Iraqi tribal leader

An Iraqi tribal leader has been killed in a suicide bombing at his house south-east of Baquba, police say.
Thaer Ghadban al-Karkhi was a member of the mainly Sunni Arab Awakening councils, allied with the US military against al-Qaeda in Iraq.
A woman detonated an explosives vest after he answered the door, killing him, his daughter and two guards.

Chemical brain controls nanobots

A tiny chemical "brain" which could one day act as a remote control for swarms of nano-machines has been invented.
The molecular device - just two billionths of a metre across - was able to control eight of the microscopic machines simultaneously.
Writing in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists say it could also be used to boost the processing power of future computers.

Iraq road bomb 'kills 16 people'



A roadside bomb has killed at least 16 people travelling on a bus in southern Iraq, reports say.
At least 22 people were also wounded in the attack.
The attack came a day after eight US soldiers and an interpreter were killed in two separate incidents, the US military said.

Activists 'to disrupt' roo cull



Animal rights activists in Australia say they will try to prevent the planned killing of more than 400 kangaroos.
Contractors are preparing to cull the animals on a former naval site in Canberra, after the new government rejected a proposal to relocate them.
The plan is to shoot some 400 kangaroos with tranquiliser darts and then to administer lethal injections.
