you more than likely dont have the right codecs installed to decode the videos, there are several codec packs which contain the common codecs, 2 popular ones are "codec pack all in one" or "nimo codec pack" - and of course you cant convert to mpeg until you have the codecs installed to be able to open the files, but if all you wanted to do that for was to play them then you dont need to do that time consuming conversion process anyway :-D
