i have a few movie files that are just large enough they won't fit on a 700mb cdr but they lack so little i hate to split them. most are 730 to 780mb. is there a compression utitily out there to bring them down to 700mb or so? i've tried winzip, stuffit, zipmagic and a couple of others but they only made about 20mb difference. any ideas? thanks peace
well you could use 99 min cds if your burner will use them.
or split the files, beyond that...well screaming and yelling might help.
Jewish Kid: Is anyone else having problems concentrating on this? I just can't seem to concentrate. : Maybe we should send you to a concentration camp.
hey vladd! i've got a hp pavilion that won't do much of anything so it more than likely won't burn the 99min cd's. as far as yelling and screaming i do plenty of that anyway but as always it's good to hear from ya. talk at ya later. thanks & peace
For movies in the 800-1 gig size, shrink the VIDEO bitrate. You will lose NO picture quality - except on a really fast action movie, or a long movie (greater than 2:30). You will need the following tool to calculate what the proper VIDEO BITRATE should have been all along http://www.divx-digest.com/software/advanced_bc.html With this tool you can estimate what a certain VIDEO bitrate will achieve for you.
After you have the bitrate (video and/or audio) set, save the avi. Depending on your processor speed - it will take from 1 hour to 8 hours (did it really used to take 8 hours)
Oh - incase you are not familiar with virtualdub. it is free. after you install it. open it. then open the movie you want to edit. select video. seleect full processing mode. select compression. select divx (i assume). select configure. CHANGE THE BITRATE. select OK. select OK. (do the same for AUDIO - if you want). Then select FILE - SAVE AS AVI.
i'm the idiot who ripped the movies. i tried vituraldub and keep getting a video error message. if you know of a program i can use and start from the beginning that will leave me a smaller file i'm willing to try it. what i'm ripping is the new Beatles Anthology DVD'S and would like to back them up in case the originals get lost or unusable. most of the nine dvd's run from 720mbs to 800mbs in mpeg form so you see my problem. thanks peace
ah - sorry. i assumed you meant an avi (divx, Xvid, etc) movie.
you can use several other tools on the page i posted earlier. i think it even has some tools (free of course) that you can use for basic mpeg editing. I think its like Flaskmpeg.
i do not use mpeg, as i dont use a stand alone dvd player. i use my computer and route the screen to the tv. so an AVI (divx, etc) works well for me.
also there is another good site out there, though i dont use it much - havent been there in months to see the content. its something like www.vcdhelp.com (not sure)
i still have the original dvds to start again with Pup. what program do you recomend to rip to avi with? i've always used easy vcd but don't mind trying anything new. i just want a smaller output file so i can back them up. thanks, peace
check out nicky's page. it is very, very well laid out and can teach you everything from ripping to proper sizing. all the tools are there via links and free for each step you need.
My thought is that it's always best to do it yourself (or at least understand what the "all-in-one" programs attempt to do)
pup: don't know if you've tried DVDx2.2 yet but it worked for me great. it rips straight from the dvd and leaves a damn good avi file about half the size of a mpeg. i did use vitural dub to combine the 5 small sections on disc 9 of beatles anthology into one file that still came out small enough (400mbs) to put one one disc. in fact all 9 discs averaged 400mbs so i was well satisfied. thanks much for the help and advice. peace
absolutly not a problem. i love the video aspect of p2p. I have tried the dvd copy products - but i am a self admited geek and love the power to Muck things up myself
tip for the day - rip the dvd to disk first - save your expensive dvd drive from spinning for hours
Hello All ,
I was about to ask about the compression of files myself i would like to find a wawy to compress data file (avi/mpeg) as back-ups i just lost 70 gig trying a full restore to get mty burner working again. i'ed like to have just the data files anyways in case i need to burn more copies later
so i take it zipping not a great thing any other ideas?
ok lets pretend i am a cute girl...oh wait i am
i have never had to worry about shrinking things before.. at least when they relate to me ;> therefore how would one suggest shrinking something (cold hads aside...) in relations to mpegs and avi's i mean ;>
From what lwhat great deal i have heard and the little i've payed attention to zipping doesn't really make much of a dent in size anyways
