Burning a DVD, guidance please.

Hi all, I want to try burning a DVD that I can watch through my TV. I have a DVD RW drive now so I went and bought some discs and gave it a try. As you have probably guessed it didnt work! I got a disc error message instead of the film I was hoping for (

I Tried to burn it using Roxio 6 but it warned me thatI may not be able to view it via a TV and it was right.

I Have also tried the method described by Vladd in the video help section using Virtual Dub and TMPG encoder. I followed the instructions and the result was 2 files, audio and video. If I was to use these extracted files do I simply drag and drop them using a program like Nero as suggested then burn the disc.

I would really appreciate a fool proof description of how its done or a link to a dvd burning section on another site dedicated to this issue.
