bittorrent suddenly stops

Postby conspiracyXX on Wed Sep 14, 2005 8:47 pm

I've been downloading torrents without any problems until now. I was downloading one today and it keeps stopping for no apparent reason after about 10 minutes and it doesn't start up again. Any ideas as to why this is happening? I keep canceling and restarting the download, but it just stops again and again.

Thanks for any input on this.

Reduce the number of global connections to 100 or less.

I use ABC and have had the same problem. Can you tell me where I can find that setting?

I tried the above "reduce global connections" and that only made matters worse. I have now come to the conclusion that there is some conflict that has suddenly developed between XP Home and ABC. I finally deleted all incomplete files, removed ABC and installed TorrentStorm and my torrents are finally working again.

Well, it seems my solution was only temporary. I have noticed that bitorrent downloads are stopping again.

I've noticed that there are a LOT of discarded packets too, the actual downloaded amount is way over the filesize, and 20% can be discarded. I've one download that is at 91% and increments by a percentage point every couple hours, but the amount of discarded data is now 240MB!!

Never had this level of discard before, makes everything to seem to stall even though bandwidth is being used up - also seems to make the web unuseable too.

There are two primary reasons for excess data on downloads. First is bad data, which is redownloaded. Make sure you set youe client to disconnect users who send bad data.
Secoind reason is downloading too fast, which causes downloaded data to be lost because your system can't write it to disk as fast as you're downloading.

Check your router, if you're using one. Make sure it's getting enough air and that it's not hot. Some routers can't handle the number of connections and the download rates you might be getting. Here's a good site for BT info: http://www.bamber.org/wiki/

No, I don't use a router. However, I think I've narrowed the suspects down to XP Home.
