Bit Torrents - a basic guide to get you started!

Postby ..Ñøßߥ.. on Wed Feb 15, 2006 3:16 am

(post updated 9/1/08 - Nobby)

Been asked by a few users recently has to how to use BT, so i dug up a basic guide i wrote ages ago to get folks started, here it is:

Start by reading up on things here - http://www.vladd44.com/torrent/terms.php

That should improve your understanding of how it all works.

The small file you DL from the torrent site is simply a file containing the info for the main DL. You need to import this small file into your BT client, it should then start automatically. The are many clients to choose from this is based on Torrent Storm as its what i use:

1. DL Torrent Storm here - http://aliendownload.com/File_Sharing/2 ... Storm.html

There are plenty of other BT clients you could use if you wish to.

2. Install Torrent Storm this is now your BT client.

3. Visit a torrent site try - http://www.torrentspy.com/directory.asp?mode=sub&id=35 plenty other sites out there either google for them, or check here http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=4097

4. Select one of the top results as a test only

5. This will then open a DL window, hit the "Download" icon

6. This will Open a DL box, click "save" and save it into a folder on your Hard drive, perhaps naming the folder BT!

7. Once the DL is complete (only takes a few seconds) Open Torrent Storm, your BT client.

8. There is a full guide you should read but for now close the guide and goto the main Torrent storm Window.

9. Click on the "Folder icon" just underneath the main "file" menu

10. Double click on the file you just DLed from the site, it should then appear in the main box, if all is well it will shortly begin to connect.

There are lots of options within Torrent storm that can be altered as you become used to the proggy.

Dont forget to read up here - http://www.vladd44.com/torrent/ and read the "getting started" section in Torrent Storm, you should be well on your way to Torrent Heaven by then!!!! Good luck!

instead of saving the torrent then finding it from inside the client, i prefer to just select "open", most clients will associate themselves with torrent files so will open automatically and load the torrent :-)

True KM, i do the same, but i believe you need to set that in options for Torrent storm, also there are some torrent sites that don't support that feature. :D

Vladd's Instructions for Azureus Client wrote:Azureus Client - (Needs JRE 1.4 installed. Can run on other OS)

I assume this means JRE 1.4 or better (I have 1.5 installed) :monkey
