Bandwidth priority issues

Postby UltraÂ?Plus on Sun Jan 05, 2003 9:11 am

Hi again.

When I'm idle, I don't care if people downloading from me use 100% of my bandwidth. It's not like I'm using it anyway.

However, I'd like to somehow make it so that if I actually need the bandwidth for something else, like web browsing, loading the webpage I'm trying to get will have priority over WinMX transfers. I've noticed that if I share certain popular files, my connection will slow down because I always have download going on.

Anyone know how I would set this up without having to change my WinMX settings every time I want to surf the web?

capping your connection at 85-90% of upload max, will provide more than enough bandwidth for web surfing. web surfing takes very little upload strength.

The trick is to know what kind of upload bandwidth you have, as cable varies as much as dsl. rare is 128 up with cable, but it does exist. more than likely you are in the 40-50K upload range.

2 ways to know for sure. 1 call your provider and ask what you bandwidth is . 2 - run a test at dslreports.com/tools - with nothing else running and see what your speed is.

I suggest you do both. get the actual numbers from isp - then compare themw ith a live test at dslreports.com. because you can also tweak your connection for max efficiency.

anyway - just cap winmx upload at 85-90% of your max and have no worries.
work sucks :pee off
