avi or not?

Postby sub_bass on Wed Feb 16, 2005 7:24 am

I nede some help.
I have downloaded a video-file from Soulseek.

I cannt ge tit to play on any player.

It is called 'Gaza_strip_documentary(divx).avi'

It is a large file, 519MB

I have tried playing it on videoLAN, WinMplayer.v10, DivX player,
I ran a scan on Gspot and it failed to identify the file but said it did not
appear to be an avi.

Where can I go now???

Try changing the extension to other video types (.mpg .asf .wmv etc) one of them should play but all else failing VLC should play it even without the CODECS installed. :mack
*Note: It may be one of the more obscure extensions like Quicktime (.mov) or Realplayer (.ram)

what version of gspot? bc it can now detect details about mpgs.

Are you certain its not a fake?

I am using gspot v2.21
And have tried VLC which opens the file but without the video window, it then shuts down after 5 seconds of reading.

Other players will error - unknown format. or not recognised. or in the case of
Windows MEdia player C00D1199: Cannot play the file (unsupported codec)

Thoguht about the fake possibility - wouldnt know how to check that.

It could also be a misnamed (extension) audio file (seen a few of those too) .. same solution as above - try different extensions (altho G-Spot should reveal if it's audio - I know it identifies MPEG1 layer 3 no matter what it's marked as) :mack

I am running into the same issue... no luck with vlc either.
I have not tried all extensions yet. I'll give it a shot.

As Vladd said, newer versions of GSpot can now recognize mpegs, and experimenting with different players before finding out what format a file is and what codec you may need is like going around a lake instead of taking a bridge to get someplace you need. I recommend version v25b3 of GSpot - you can use newer versions too, but I like this one best so far.
Here are instructions on using it, and read them through - just because GSpot says you have codecs installed doesn't mean your computer is atually using the right one to play them back, you have to actually render the file in gspot to see what's going on in detail:
