asf or avi????

Postby mxmon_glasgowrangers on Thu Mar 18, 2004 2:43 pm

hi again,
i finally resolved my playback problem and all avi's are running smooth:)
i aquired  return of the king. it is an avi file = 960mb
when i interigatted it with gspot codec detector it came up as an asf/wmv file. when i tried to play it media player (9) said aquiring license? - wot that mean?? when i got the license i expected the file to open but alas i waited 20 mins and nothin happened. iv tried this twice and both times the same and ive also tried to play it in bsplayer and divx player.
any suggestings to whats going on.

one other quick thing.
i upgraded to xp pro (yippiee)last night and now my album wrap mp3's wont work any more. it keeps saying it needs "mpv2" codec. i never had this prob before on 98se. i have hunted high and low to find this codec and no joy.

well hear from ya soon
cya

Well asf and wmv are both microsoft codecs, asf being the video codec and wmv being the audio codec. If your wmp player was "acquiring license" and didn't get anyplace, I would guess that there is something wrong with the registration of your wmp. I would try reinstalling it or getting the codecs separately and trying with another player. After you installed xp pro did you download the latest critical updates from the windows site? If you did and it still didn't work, I would try reinstalling windows media player. I'm no advocate of wmp, personally I uninstall it, but if it's not working correctly, it might be an indication of something having gone wrong during your upgrade to xp pro.

Here is a link for this codec:
http://www.tranceaddict.com/files/m2v_codec.exe

But again, wmp should play mpv2 files, another indication that there is something wrong with your windows media player. If something went wrong during installation, it might have even overwritten or deleted the codecs, even if you had them before.

Well actually asf's are usually named .asf - if gspot says it's an asf, try renaming the extension of the file to .asf and see if it plays then... (?)

AND if you're new to XP you probably don't know that you have to tell it to show extensions before you can change them...In Explorer folder (the one containing your file will do nicely) goto Tools / Folder Options / View Tab / uncheck "Hide extensions of known file types"..then rename file (change extension to .asf) & give it a try..will probably work - if not back to ole dap

p.s. Don't forget to re-check "Hide etc"
