another TMPGEnc problem

Postby ][v][OTOBOT on Mon Apr 05, 2004 1:15 am

I have an MPEG file that may not be an MPEG file??? I want to split it but when I hilight it & go to the edit screen it tells me that it's an "Illegal MPEG video stream" I've never had this problem before. What seems to be the problem? Thanks!

Maybe, or you might be missing an mpeg1 or mpeg2 codec depending on what the file is, but since you say you've never had this problem before it sounds like you've worked with many mpegs, so it's not likely.

Well you can check to see what kind of mpeg you have, get
AVIcodec (codec identifier) from the Tools section of
http://www.rita.lt/

It will tell you whether it's a vcd, svcd etc. You can also check the specs you get from it to determine whether it's a standard mpeg with the chart here:

I am still not sure what I need to do. As far as the number of video files I've worked with I am still a NEWWWWBY. lol I checked the MPEG file with the AVI CoDec (codec identifier) it says it's an MPEG file that is supported. All I know is that I can play the video file just fine. It's only when I go to split it that I have the problem. Here is some info from the codec Id'er.

Mpeg-1 audio layer-1

Video : 756 MB, 1187 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 352*240 (4:3), = MPEG Video, Supported.

Audio : 142 MB, 224 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x50 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 1, Supported

Well these are the standard specs for a vcd:
Video:
1150 kbit/sec MPEG-1
352 x 240 pixels
29,97 fps NTSC
Audio:
44100 Hz
224 kbit/sec MPEG-1 Layer2

Yours are:
Video:
1187 Kbps
352*240 (4:3)
29.970 fps
Audio:
44100 Hz
224 Kbps, 2 channels, 0x50 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 1

Looks pretty standard to me, although what did catch my eye is that yours is not Mpeg-1 Layer 2 but Mpeg-1 Layer 1, which I HAVE seen before but not often. Since I have no xvcd's or xsvcd's (vcd's or svcd's which do not meet the standard specs) to play with, I can't help you much to determine if TMPEGnc tools would have a hard time splitting a sub-standard vcd. This is what I found for this audio compression, however:

<audio, compression, algorithm> (MP1) A simple 32-subband audio compressor using a floating point representation for subband samples. Resolution and scale factor are stored for groups of 12 subsamples. MP1 is only used for Philips DCC Digital Compact cassette with data rates of 384 kbps.

You might have to try and decompress the audio (and I don't know if you can do that in TMPGENc tools).

Since we don't really know if that is actually the problem, I would try a few other things first. You never told me if you are using TMPGEnc or TMPGEnc Plus - the standard freeware version may have some restrictions in tmpgenc tools, but I'm not sure.

Make sure you are using TMPGEnc Plus, or you can try obtaining a video splitter like "Easy Video Splittter" which will split both avis and mpegs, unfortunately it's not free. You can also try installing VirtualDubMpeg and see if you can split it in Vdub, you can dl it from
http://www.rita.lt/

If all else fails, you can always write to TMPGEnc and ask them what they think:
