My PC is acting strange playing an AVI file.

When I tried to play an AVI file (800 mb) with Windows Media Player Classic or VLC or MPlayer, I get the message opening file and the player just hangs.

Then when I try to close it, I will get NOT RESPONDING message and I will have to END TASK under CTRL ALT DEL, which at the time is showing this file is using up 100% of my resources.

But when I use Windows Media Player 10.0, it will play it just fine.

What gives?

I don't like WMP 10.0 and I would like to be able to play this file using MPC or VLC.

I tried playing other files using the same 3 players and they play with no problem at all.

Not only that, u will also at most times, see a OGG display icon on bottom right when this happens.

Some video files have this problem.

The solution is to use WMP 10.0 and it is probably a bug that WMP 10.0 has overcome.

Will move this thread to Video Help and see if Dap can answer this one.

Well I could say that WMP is geared towards using all your resources anyway so maybe it handles that better....lol... but I guess instead I'll say to check what codec the file has been encoded with using GSpot and when you go to the link to get GSpot, actually READ all the instructions on the page to figure out how to see what your players are REALLY using to decode the file, it's not enough just to load GSpot and have it tell you that you have the codec - you can have 20 codecs theoretically capable of decoding the file you have, it doesn't necessarily mean that the right one is being used to do it:

My guess is that either you don't actually have the codec and some other direct show filter is playing back your file, one that VLC and WMPC don't like, or else you do have the codec but for some reason a direct show filter or other codec are overriding the right one. Also, sometimes if the codecs aren't standard different players will have their own plugins to play them back.
